cheap gloves + mittens over the top has saved my life this winter.

you may also want to try little hotties hand warmers. a couple of bloggers recommended them for me and it really helps!

Mittens were nice this beautiful Tuesday morning!

7ºF - Same as yesterday, but I ditched the short sleeve Tech T and added the shell of my boarding glittens (pointer-finger, thumb, and 3 fingers in one).  I'm guessing that the canyon was colder than 7ºF, but my temperature was pretty nice - cool arms for a while though...

From Jason McK on Mon, Feb 07, 2011 at 11:31:31 from 63.255.173.99

Thanks all... Ogden Marathon is next on my list. I'd love to break 2:50 and hope that aerobic capacity isn't what stops me. Next I'll have to work on speed. What's your next marathon?

From Mattrow on Mon, Feb 07, 2011 at 17:55:57 from 192.107.247.6

Ogden is my next marathon also. I think your speed should be there. You averaged a 7:45 mile on the second of back to back 20 milers and negative split it. I am impressed.

Working on Speed, good luck. I am hurting thinking about it.

Yassor 800's Nice work.

Make sure you get some recovery miles in. Just looking at your last 3 workouts back to back 20 milers then a speed workout. It might only be me, but last year I put to many hard workouts back to back and ended up injurying myself. You do have a great base, alot better than I ever had, so you might be ok.

From Jason McK on Tue, Feb 08, 2011 at 12:15:24 from 63.255.173.99

Thanks for the advice, I hadn't even considered that. In the summer, Mondays were my track days and my long runs were Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Until you mentioned it, it was just another 'summer Monday'...

Hey allie! Things are going pretty well (except a little tendonitis...). My next race is Ogden Marathon. I haven't decided whether I'll do it as a fitness run, or PR attempt. Right now I'm leaning toward fitness, but who know. How about yourself? Still focusing on 1/2 PRs? Good luck with improving your impressive speed.!

From allie on Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 22:21:05 from 174.23.192.205

yes, i am still focusing on the 1/2 for now -- at least until may (which seems to be coming up fast).

best of luck with your training for ogden.

Last week had to tease us that the weather was getting better. Back to the teens.

From Jason McK on Tue, Feb 22, 2011 at 12:29:54 from 63.255.173.99

I'm ok with the teens. It's below 10 that I have to start wearing a face mask, which is annoying. Nice week last week!

Tendonitis, and maybe a strained adductor. The tendonitis gradually came on (maybe overuse ?), basketball probably keeps it here...

After thinking that it was my shoes with 1100 miles that was causing tendonitis for the last couple months, this run convinced me that it was the newer, same model of shoe with the 500 or so miles that now have 750...  What a waste of 2 months.

They worked well enough. I'll see how they (as well as myself) hold up.

From Jason McK on Wed, Apr 06, 2011 at 12:31:38 from 63.255.173.99

I wish... I probably should take a couple months off, but I'll wait until October! I take it your back though! When is your next long race?

From Mattrow on Thu, Apr 07, 2011 at 10:56:27 from 192.107.247.6

Yes you could say I am back. I don't think I have the fittness I had in 2009 before the St George Marathon, but pretty close. As for my next race. I am planning on running the Striders 30K on April 23. I won't be tappering for the race, but it will give my a good trial for the Ogden Marathon. The 13 of the 18 miles of the 30K is on the Ogden Marathon course so I should help get a feel for the course.

Still planning on doing it, it just won't be what I had trained for through January... What's your plan?

From Chad Robinson on Wed, May 11, 2011 at 15:17:36 from 67.136.62.186

I am shooting for a 2:55. I plan to stay in the 6:40's for the first half and see what the second half will give me (I do well running down hill).

I started out with my cousin (who wanted to get 3:40).  At first I was just going to pace her for the first mile or two so that she didn't start out too fast.  She had the flu starting 2 weeks ago for 10 days.  She felt pretty good by Tuesday and so she ran Wed-Fri.  After the second mile, I decided I'd go three, and then I decided just to hang with her until 15.  We were doing well and holding back and were right on target until about mile 12.  She said that her heart rate seemed good, as well as her breathing, but her legs felt tired (seems like the results of having the flu to me).  So we lost some time in 12-15.  At that point, she told me to go on without her, so I took off!  I think I averaged 8:28 for the 1st 15 miles and 7:23 for the last 11.  I'm happy with that, considering that I've been running about 30 miles per week the past 5 weeks (not including this week).

Nutrition went something like this: Hawaiian Haystacks Friday night (about 7:30 - a little later than I had hoped) and Chocolate Chip-Banana-Oatmeal Cookies.  Wheaties (1 cup) for breakfast, then 2 more cookies about 20 minutes before the race (about mile 3 I decided that eating them probably wasn't ideal, but no big deal.)  Gatorade at most aid station.  At mile, 7 I tried a Vanilla flavored Clif gu thing. At mile 11, after getting my cousin what she needed, I tried a Mint Chocolate Clif bar - nice!  A little before mile 17, I had a hammer gel, then tried another flavor of Clif Gu around mile 21.  After mile 15, at the aid stations I used cold water to cool me off.

It was awesome to see my family at the mouth of the Canyon (mom and sis tried to run with me as I gave them updates on my cousin and brother, but at that point, my pace was a 7:10) then I saw my wife and daughters!  Passed a few people I knew in the last 1.5 miles - they had started towards the front, but were loosing speed.  This holding back thing may not give the best times, but it sure is motivating to pass people at the end!

Normally I start out with my HR at 166, then 169, at half and 172-whatever for the last 5.  My plan in January was to run this as a long training run and keep my HR between 153 and 160, where I thought I could easily run a 3:20 since I ran 20 in 2:35 the day after running 20 in 2:40 - both out and back in the freezing cold with a lot of cold.  Then tendonitis hit...so my plan changed a little.  I had decided that I would aim for 158 at the beginning, allowing it to climb to the upper 160s by the end.  I was sure that I could finish between 3:26 and 3:35 based on my most recent long runs.  The last 11 miles, my HR averaged between 178 and 181 each mile - the longest I've ever sustained an HR like that.

Because my plan was not to race or PR, I slept great!  I realize I should have gone to bed well before 11:30, but since I don't normally sleep well, I stayed up chatting.  Once I fell asleep, I was out until my alarm!

Nice job Jason! That's got to be the biggest negative split EVER!

Nice job Jason on a long training/pacing run. I was hoping to catch up with you some time during the day, but it never happened. Thanks, for suggesting that I debut at Ogden, I really enjoyed it (other than the timing issue). I plan on running both TOU events this year so maybe we can meet up then.

From Smooth on Wed, May 25, 2011 at 15:05:18 from 67.2.121.30

When I first saw your splits, I thought WOW Jason knows how to hang back and take advantage of the canyon's downhill and finish with a kick! That was a huge negative splits!

sounds like a successful long training run for ya! How fun to have the clan there to support you and your cousin! How did she do? GREAT JOB, Jason!

nice job, jason! looks like it was a great run for you.

TOU again this year?

That is a very impressive training run. I love how you monitor so much via your heartrate. I keep wanting to implement that strategy into my training/racing/etc. I just need to get to it. :)

Very nice!!! :) :) :)

Bear Lake Marathon

26.2 3:22:19 168/176 - A decent run and a Bear Lake PR by 3 minutes.  I planned to get a good run in (instead of a great race - I find that if I decide my race plan the morning for the race, I sleep a lot better).  The night went as well as expected - I had 4 of my daughters in the room with me, with my bro-in-law in the next room with his two kids, etc...  The crying wasn't too bad, but the sleeping wasn't great.  By 4:00, I had slept around 4.5 hours, which is about as good as any pre-race sleep.

The Bear Lake Marathon starts when the race director decides it's time (meaning that he thinks everyone is done using the pops).  I was getting rid of my drop bag when he said 'GO!'  Then I had to wait while my watch reset and acquired a gps signal.  As it did, I stood at the starting line waiting.  30 seconds after everyone else, I took off, slowly, like I had 50 miles ahead of me.

Looking back at race reports, I realized that my heart rate in the last 6 miles seems highly dependent on my nutrition in the first 13 miles, so I had GU at 5, 9, 15, and 19.  I brought electrolyte pills just in case, and took 2 at miles 7, 17, and 21.

The weather for the first half was scattered sprinkles with a nice head wind.  The next 8 miles, it was a little warmer and there was still a head wind.  Then it heated up more and the wind died off.  I tried to keep my HR around 166 for the first half, 169 for the next 1/4, then 172 to the end.  I executed my HR plan fairly well and ended up passing all but 4 runners.

The aid stations were well done (except the one at 23.2).  The volunteers would ask if you wanted gatorade or water, then hand you the cup as you ran by (as well as GU).  At mile 23.2, they moved out of the way so you could figure out which cups contained what.  But, at least this year, they used paper cups!

The last 5 miles were tough.  I'm sure it's because they were the last 5 miles, but maybe I wasn't fully recovered from last weeks 'marathon' or maybe I didn't taper enough, but I did keep them all under 8:00.  My brother was running back along the course and found me around 24.7 miles and ran me in.  If he hadn't, I'm sure I would have let up and maybe hit 3:24-3:25.  I'm so glad he was there - this is my second fastest, but 3:24:04 was that close...

As I made the final turn into the park, my legs were finished.  If it had been a 27.2 mile race, I think the last mile would have easily been 10 minutes.  My oldest 2 girls ran across the finish line with me!

Just like last year, they still haven't figured out how do awards.  They did give out the 'overall' awards within an hour or so of knowing the winners, but by 12:20, the still hadn't started the age division awards.  I finished around 10:05 - there really wasn't much to do.  The only people still there were the ones waiting for awards.  Some had left and come back hoping they had missed it so they could just grab their award and go - they were flabbergasted that they still had to wait...

No TOU 1/2 this year????

Tendonitis (ignored) turned into a couple of pulled adductors... A great winter of training and no summer of races to show for it. Supposedly 6-8 months off is the cure.

Darn those ignored injuries! Sorry I did not know, I have a hard time keeping up with people lately (ok, for like 5 months!)

When will you be able to get back at it? It looks like you are doing some running.

No posts in forever! Did you run it this year or just observe again?
